Welcome to Day 2 of the MDPN 100, which is 100 days worth of storytelling prompts to help you market your product in subtle and engaging ways.

As always, I want to start by saying that you should NOT use AI to write your story. I say this because when you give AI your full backstory and what you learned from it, it can then learn it and feed it to any and everyone on the internet. We’re entering a time where the only thing that’ll set you apart from your competitors AND AI is your story and expertise. The stories you have and the lessons you’ve learned that AI can’t replace or replicate (yet, and hopefully never). So I think it’s really important for you to protect them.

Now let’s jump into the lesson.

Day 2 breaks down the mistake that led to the creation of your product. Highlight the ripple effect it had in your life and what it cost you personally and professionally.

This kind of story is effective because it humanizes your brand and makes it far more relatable to your audience.

We all make mistakes. Heck, I sometimes make 10 a day.

But for some reason, we’re conditioned to be ashamed of the natural human cycle of messing up, learning, and growing.

Society constantly pressures us to hide our flaws and present ourselves as “perfect”, no matter how obvious it is that we aren’t.

Talking about your big mistake, and what it cost you, makes your audience think, “Wow, they’re just like me”.

It also makes them view you and your brand as honest. And in a world of filters and facades, honesty is refreshing.

Anyone that can talk about their F up’s openly and honestly is usually seen as trustworthy.

And like we said in Day 1, people that trust you will follow you, and eventually buy from you.

And most importantly, it positions you as an EXPERT they can trust. Because your target audience has probably made the same mistake you did, maybe even multiple times.

But YOU’RE the one that found a solution.

YOU’RE the one that achieved success after making the mistake.

YOU made it out of the mess they’re still stuck in, and that’s what’ll make them want to follow YOU.

And if they haven’t made the same mistake, reading about your experience and the trouble it caused you will make them eager to learn how to avoid facing similar consequences.

And when you position your product as the thing that helps them avoid that path of destruction, they’ll be much more interested in buying.

This story ignites the sense of “urgency” that marketers are always talking about. And you’re accomplishing all of this without “hard selling” them.
